The end of the page
Every reading interface since the codex has traded away something the page did quietly well. Before anyone declares the future of reading, somebody should write down what the page actually does — because we sell the thing that deletes it entirely.

The page is an interface, though five centuries of familiarity make it hard to see as one. It has a fixed size, a coordinate system, a top and a bottom, and a set of affordances so deeply learned that we mistake them for properties of reading itself. They are not. They are design decisions, they have alternatives, and the alternatives are winning. Before the page goes, somebody should write down what it did.
This matters to us for an awkward reason: we make one of the alternatives. Our app shows a single word at a fixed point — no page, no line, no margins, nothing to turn. If the page has virtues, we have deleted every one of them, and honesty obliges us to name them more carefully than the page’s defenders usually bother to, precisely because for us the subject is not academic.
What the page quietly does well
Start with place memory. Readers remember where on a page a thing was — top left, near the fold, just after the diagram — and use that spatial index to find it again. The effect is familiar to anyone who has hunted a half-remembered sentence by its position rather than its words. A page is a stable coordinate system; text laid on it acquires an address, and memory is good at addresses.
Then random access. A book opens anywhere. The physical object supports jumping, flicking, riffling, holding one place with a thumb while checking another — operations so cheap the reader barely registers performing them. And re-reading is free: the eyes simply go back. The eye-movement record says skilled readers make a regression on something like one saccade in seven, which means going back is not a failure mode of reading. It is a load-bearing part of how comprehension gets done.
There are smaller virtues too. A page is a progress meter — thickness moved from the right hand to the left — and a natural unit of effort: one more page is a promise a tired reader can keep. Layout carries meaning: a paragraph’s shape, a section break’s white space, the visible approach of a chapter’s end all reach the reader before a single word is decoded. The page communicates in the peripheral field even while the fovea does the reading.
None of this was designed, exactly. It fell out of the codex’s physical form and print’s fixed layout, and because nobody chose these virtues, nobody wrote them into any specification. That is the trouble with inherited virtues: they are invisible until an alternative quietly drops one, and the drop shows up not as a missing feature but as a vague sense that reading on the new surface is harder to hold on to.
Three departures, three trades
The scroll came first — a return, really, since the codex replaced scrolls the first time around and the web reinvented them. Scrolling keeps random access, roughly, but destroys the coordinate system: on an unbounded ribbon there is no “top of the page”, and position memory has nothing stable to bind to. An address on a scroll is “somewhere in the middle”, which is no address at all. Our reading of the screen-reading research is that this loss of stable position is the likeliest reason long scrolled documents feel harder to navigate than paged ones — a reading we hold with moderate confidence, not certainty.
Each departure bought something, and fairness requires the ledger. The scroll bought fluid text — reflowable across any screen, resizable for any eye, the accessibility win print could never deliver. Cards bought triage across many sources at once. The stream bought controlled pace and a fixed gaze. Nobody abandoned the page out of carelessness; they abandoned it because the page’s virtues were invisible and the new surface’s gains were demonstrable in a shop.
Cards — the unit of feeds, decks and read-later queues — trade differently from scrolls. A card restores boundaries but shrinks the text to fit them; whatever does not fit is truncated behind a fold or a tap. Random access across a deck is good; access within a text is poor, because the text has been diced. And the card’s real allegiance is usually to the feed it sits in, which is a machine optimised for onward motion — the next card, never this one.
The stream is the third departure and the sharpest. RSVP — text presented serially at a fixed point — abolishes layout altogether. There is no where; there is only when. The scroll kept space and stretched it; the card diced it; the stream discards it. Time becomes the text’s only dimension, and every spatial habit a reader owns is made obsolete in one stroke.
On a page, a sentence has an address. In a stream, it has only a time, and the time has passed.
The trade, stated plainly
The extreme case is ours
A single-word stream is the limiting case of the departure, and it is what we sell, so let us do the accounting ourselves rather than leave it to critics. Place memory: gone — there are no places. Random access: gone — there is no surface to access, only a timeline you can pause and scrub. Free re-reading: gone — a word that has passed must be summoned back, and the one-in-seven regression rate suggests readers would summon often. For syntactically dense prose, where a reader may need the start of the sentence again on reaching its end, this is the heaviest cost this class of interface carries, and we have never pretended otherwise.
What is bought with all that? The other side of the ledger is real: no line to track and lose, no return sweep, no interference from neighbouring words — the case set out in the crowding problem — and a pace that can be set, watched, and stretched at punctuation rather than left to wander. We think the trade is worth it for some readers, some texts, some purposes. We are confident it is not worth it for all three at once, ever, and a vendor who says otherwise has stopped describing an interface and started describing a faith.
There is a subtler cost we can only gesture at: the page trains a kind of self-awareness. Losing your place is information — it tells you attention has drifted. A stream that keeps delivering words to a fixed point can outrun a wandering mind without either party noticing, which is why the attention ledger matters more, not less, once the page is gone. We designed our recall check for exactly this failure, and we still regard it as the stream’s least-solved problem.
Where the page survives
Prediction, plainly labelled as ours. The page survives wherever the reader must study rather than traverse: law, scripture, poetry, proofs, contracts, anything annotated, anything argued with in the margins. It survives wherever a text is a place a reader returns to, because return is what pages are for. And it survives in every future of reading that involves two people pointing at the same passage — pointing needs coordinates.
The stream takes the other territory: the traversals. Prose read once, forward, for the thread of it — news, briefings, fiction on a commute, the long middles of documents whose beginnings and ends get the study. That is not a small territory; it may be most of what gets read in a day. But it is a territory with a border, and the border is drawn by exactly the things the page did well.
Interfaces rarely die; they retreat to what they are best at. The scroll survived print inside film credits and ceremonial documents. Print is surviving screens in the places where its virtues bind hardest. The page will do the same, and the interesting design work of the next decade is not replacing it but learning its borders — which means the people building reading interfaces owe the page a better obituary than “legacy format”. It was the best answer anyone had for five hundred years. The burden of proof sits with whatever comes after, ours included.
