A watch is a terrible page.
It is a very good single word.

Everywhere else Reader Inc. runs, it wastes almost all of the screen it was given — one word, at one fixed point, and darkness at the edges. A watch is the first surface where that stops being waste and starts being fit. There is now a Wear OS build in the repository, which nobody has yet worn. This page is the argument behind it, the honest limits, and a working face you can read from right now.

There is a Wear OS app now, and nobody has worn it. It lives at apps/wear — reader, inbox, manifest and gradle, native Compose rather than the web app in a shell — and you can build it from source today. It has not been through a compiler here, no reader has been put in front of it, and there is still no watchOS build, no waiting list and no date. What is unambiguously real is the face below: it runs the same delivery, the same resolver ladder and the same rhythm as the app, at watch scale, in this browser.

01 — The face

Read something on it.

Tap the glass. The word never moves, so there is no line to track and nothing to scroll. The readout underneath names the tier that produced each picture as it appears — On the platform is the passage that exercises all four, including the word it had to invent a mark for.

This face carries 118 hand-drawn icons, not the full 528, and the library tier — the 200,000-icon fallback — is switched off, because a concept page has no business making network calls on your behalf. That is why some words fall all the way to the procedural mark. In the app they would not.

02 — Why the wrist

The screen was never doing the work.

The finding that ends most speed-reading claims is the same one that makes a watch plausible. The bottleneck in reading is language processing, not vision — so the amount of glass in front of you was never the thing carrying the sentence. A display that cannot show a paragraph takes nothing from a reader who was never shown a paragraph.

Nothing to track

What a small screen normally costs you is line tracking, reflow and the trade between type size and how much text fits. At one word at a time all three go to zero rather than getting smaller. There is no line to lose your place in, because there are no lines.

The word can be enormous

A watch can render a word at a size a phone cannot render a sentence. The usual accessibility bargain — bigger type, less text, more scrolling — does not apply when the text was never going to be more than one word wide.

A timeout becomes a pause

A paragraph interrupted by a screen going dark is a paragraph you have to find your way back into. A stream interrupted between two words is a pause: lower your arm, raise it again, and the same word is waiting. Nothing has to be recovered.

03 — Dimensionally

The same six constraints, answered two ways.

Roughly 400 by 480 points of glass, a screen built to wake for seconds and time out, one speaker, no keyboard worth the name, and a battery that treats a permanently lit display as an emergency. Hostile conditions for a reading app. Neutral conditions for a word.

04 — Who would notice first

The people the surface already taxes.

Not everyone would feel the difference. The readers who would are the ones paying a cost on ordinary pages that has nothing to do with how well they understand what they eventually decode.

Readers with dyslexia

Dyslexia is a difficulty with accurate, fluent word recognition and decoding — not with thinking, and not with understanding something read aloud. One word, a picture and a voice attack decoding load on three channels at once.

Readers with low vision

Isolated presentation removes flanking letters entirely, which is what crowding needs to happen. And a word gets the whole face — the size you need costs you nothing, because there is no second word to make room for.

Readers who lose the thread

A fixed point that advances by itself removes the moment where attention drifts and the eye has to hunt for the line. Our own reasoning, not a research finding — and the counter-argument is real: a stream that will not wait is a stream you can fall behind.

Anyone reading one-handed

Carrying a child, holding a rail, wearing gloves, or living with limited grip or one usable arm. A wrist needs no hand at all. Unglamorous, and a genuine gain.

05 — What it would cost

The case against it, made properly.

Every argument above is ours, and every one of them has a price attached. Three of these are serious enough to stop the concept on their own.

The one that worries us most

You cannot re-read, and on a wrist you cannot repair it either.

Skilled readers make a backwards saccade on roughly one saccade in seven, and many of those are comprehension failures being fixed in real time rather than motor accidents. Single-word presentation removes that ability. On a desktop you can stop, scrub back and read the sentence properly with a keyboard under your hands — the repair mechanism that makes the format survivable. On a wrist there is no keyboard, the scrub target is a few millimetres wide, and your arm is moving.

This is not a limitation we expect to design away. It is the reason the honest pitch here is four paragraphs in a queue rather than a book on your arm, and the reason complex prose belongs on a surface that lets you go backwards.

  1. Pace has to be re-learned

    Everything known about comfortable reading speed was measured in a chair. Beyond roughly 400–500 wpm on unfamiliar prose comprehension falls away — but nobody has established where that curve sits for someone walking to a station with a bag in one hand.

  2. The motion may not survive

    The grammar works by animating sub-elements — only the raindrops fall, the cloud holds still. At 40mm, at a glance, at speed, that distinction may simply not be perceptible. An icon whose motion cannot be read is just a smaller icon.

  3. Battery is a real cost

    A lit screen and a running voice are the two most expensive things a watch can do. Doing both for twenty minutes takes something from a device its owner needs for the rest of the day, and we have no clever answer to that.

  4. Getting text in is unsolved

    Nobody will load a document on a wrist. It has to arrive already parsed from a phone or a desktop. If getting the text in costs more effort than reading it, the concept is dead on arrival.

  5. What we will not claim

    That it lets anyone read a book on a watch. That it is a therapy, a treatment or an intervention for dyslexia or anything else — it is a display. That it is safe to read while walking. Or that any of it works, because it does not exist and has been tested on nobody.

06 — Before we would ship it

Four things that would have to be true.

In this order. Writing the code turned out to be the cheap part — the first two are design commitments the build has already made, and the third is a two-week experiment that gates everything else. It has not been run. Until it has, what exists is source rather than a product.

The voice leads, not the screen

A watch is a listening device with a display attached. Speech as master clock, with the word and icon as the glanceable confirmation, is the version that survives a screen timeout — and it inherits the argument from reading versus listening instead of ignoring it.

Text arrives without typing

Pushed from the phone or desktop already parsed, or picked up from a queue built somewhere with a keyboard. The share sheet on Android is the shape of the answer; the wrist is the last stop, never the first.

Icons survive at glance size

A prototype showing nothing but the curated set at watch scale, tested for whether the motion grammar still reads at a glance. If it does not, the concept loses the only thing separating it from every other wrist word-streamer, and it should be abandoned rather than shipped with the picture quietly switched off.

On-device resolution, no account, no telemetry, zero bytes of your reading uploaded. A wearable is the most intimate device a person owns. A wearable reading app that phoned home would be worse than no wearable reading app at all.
