What ‘best reading app’ actually means

Every January the listicles crown a new best reading app, ranked on screenshots and feature counts. Here are five questions that would produce an honest ranking — and what happens when you ask them of every category, including ours.

Type ‘best reading app’ into a search engine and you will get lists — ten apps, ranked, each with a screenshot, a feature table and a verdict. The lists disagree with each other, refresh annually, and almost never say what ‘best’ is measuring. That is not a scandal; it is a genre. But reading is a strange thing to rank this way, because the point of reading happens inside a person, where a screenshot cannot see.

The listicle economy runs on what can be checked in an afternoon: does the app have a dark mode, how many formats does it import, is there a free tier, what does the subscription cost. Many such lists are funded by referral links, which is worth knowing not because it makes the authors dishonest — it mostly does not — but because it quietly filters which apps are worth writing about at all. The result is a ranking of the measurable. Whether anyone finished a difficult chapter and understood it does not appear in any column.

So the phrase ‘best reading apps’ needs replacing before it can be answered. Best for whom, at what, measured how? A tool that is excellent for triaging saved articles can be useless for studying a textbook; a superb text-to-speech voice does nothing for a reader whose real problem is an unread pile. What follows are five questions that sort the field better than any star rating we have seen — and they can be asked of every category, including the one this magazine’s publisher sits in.

Notice first what the questions will not include: number of supported formats, beauty of the interface, presence of a mascot. Not because those things do not matter — a tool you enjoy opening is a tool you actually use — but because they are what every list already measures, and they are the qualities least connected to whether reading went better. The screenshot layer is real. It is just the layer where every competent product now looks roughly the same.

Five questions worth the name

  1. Does it measure comprehension? Most reading apps report speed, streaks or minutes. Almost none check whether anything was understood. Any tool that claims to change how you read owes you an instrument for what you retained — otherwise its numbers are measuring the packaging.
  2. Where does your reading data go? What you read, when, how fast and how often is an intimate record. Find the sentence in the privacy policy that says where it is stored and who can see it. If the sentence is hard to find, that is also an answer.
  3. What does the free tier withhold? A free tier is a statement of incentives. Some withhold convenience — sync, history, backup. Some meter the core function until you pay. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are standing in before you build a habit there.
  4. Can you leave with your data? Highlights, saves, history, progress: export is the difference between a tool and a landlord. Check the export before you need it, and check what format it produces — a proprietary blob is not an exit.
  5. What happens when the company dies? Reading apps die often, taking libraries and archives with them. An app that works offline, from local files, survives its maker. One that phones home for every page does not. The question sounds morbid until the year it stops being hypothetical.

Asking them of the categories

Run the questions across the field and a pattern appears: every category is strong on the questions its architecture makes easy, and weak on the ones its architecture makes awkward. That is worth more than a ranking, because it tells you what you would be trading, not just what you would be getting. The table gives the shape; the prose below gives the caveats, which is where the truth usually lives.

The read-later category is genuinely good at what it claims: capture, clean reformatting, honest export. Its unanswered question is the first one — the pile grows because saving is measured and reading is not, a dynamic examined in read-later apps and the unread pile. Summarisers answer a different question from everyone else — what did this book say? — and answer it usefully for triage, so long as nobody mistakes the answer for having read anything.

Ebook readers are the most mature category and the most divided. The book is on your device and reading works in aeroplane mode — question five, answered — but the mainstream stores keep reading behaviour on their side of the fence, and leaving with your annotations ranges from trivial to impossible depending on the shop. Text-to-speech and listening apps are the category doing the most unambiguous good, because for a reader who cannot decode comfortably they change what is possible rather than what is pleasant. Their weakness is inherited from the wider field: speed features are advertised far more loudly than any measure of what was retained.

Speed-reading trainers are the category most in need of the first question, because speed is their entire pitch. A words-per-minute figure with no comprehension score attached is not evidence of reading faster; it is evidence of pages passing. The handful of tools that do test comprehension deserve real credit for it. A fuller tour of that category, mechanism by mechanism, is in speed reading apps, compared fairly.

And ours. This app checks recall after a passage and shows the score next to the speed; the whole thing is one file that runs on-device, uploads nothing and works offline, so questions two and five come easily — the architecture, not virtue, deserves the credit. The free tier meters the core function: it caps a day’s reading at 5,000 words, which is a real withholding and you should weigh it like any other. Sessions export. And question one cuts against us too: a recall check is a narrow instrument. It measures whether words registered, not whether an argument was followed.

A ranking that never asks what was understood has ranked the packaging.

The missing column

The question behind the questions

All five questions reduce to one: who bears the risk? An app that measures comprehension takes the risk that its method fails in public. An app that stores your reading centrally asks you to bear the risk of every future breach, acquisition and shutdown; one that keeps data on your device bears the commercial cost of not having it. A free tier that withholds sync asks you to risk little; one that meters the core function asks you to trust the meter. None of these choices is villainy. They are architecture, and architecture is a promise that outlasts any marketing page.

The mortality question earned its place recently. Pocket — for years the default read-later app, built into a major browser — was retired by its owner in 2025, and every archive that lived only on its servers needed exporting on a deadline. Nothing about that was malicious; products end, and this one ended with notice and an export path. But it settled the argument about whether ‘what happens when the company dies’ is a paranoid question. It is a scheduling question.

An answer you can actually use

So here is the only honest resolution of ‘best reading app’ we can offer. Choose the category that matches your actual problem — access, triage, pace, study, or an unread pile — then ask the five questions of two or three candidates, then run your own trial: the same kind of material, a week in each, and some check on what you remembered, for which testing your own comprehension gives a method. The app that survives that is the best one. It will be the best one for you, which is the only kind of best the word supports.
